Rape, sexual assault and sexual battery all refer to non-consensual sexual acts. Rape is nonconsensual sex through force or coercion or with someone unable to give consent. Sexual assault and battery are forms of touching and groping. All of these crimes carry with them very serious consequences. They can range from class B misdemeanors to felonies depending on the circumstance and aggravating factors. In most cases where these charges are brought, the suspect and victim know each other and are sometimes in a relationship.
